Description

1979 Kawasaki Z1000ST

An absolutely classic Kawasaki air-cooled 4 stroke this 1979 Kawasaki Z1000ST has just undergone a complete last nut & bolt restoration. It has done a genuine 21,800Km. Finished in original Kawasaki Luminous Dark Red it is presented in mint condition. This model was Kawasaki’s first shaft drive bike and is essentially a shaft drive version of the Z1000 MkII. The engine is the same as fitted to the Z1R. It is a non-USA market model and therefore does not have any of the American market emissions control parts fitted.

Bikes History

An immigrant imported this bike into NZ from South Africa in April 1997 with 18,000Km on the clock. It was unserviceable at the time, so was never registered and was stored for approx. 10 years. It then had several unregistered NZ owners who managed to put another 3,000Km on it. The present owner acquired the bike unserviceable & unregistered in 2016 at 21,800Km. Given the good internal condition of the engine when stripped this appears to be genuine mileage. We have the paperwork trail including South African plate & de-registration through importation and most NZ owners.

Frame # is KZTOOE007709

Engine # is KZTOOEE007746

From various manufacturing date stamp codes on the bike it was probably manufactured in August 1979. The bike has been VINed, complied (including brake disc thickness & run-out checks) and now registered with plate C2AKS.

The Restoration

  • Bike completely stripped to last nut & bolt (see pics) including engine & gearbox.
  • Frame & Engine, in fact everything you see on the bike that’s black (including handle bar switch gear) was powder-coated by Tim Kerr at Pro Coat.
  • Wheels vapour blasted and powder coated. All bearings replaced.
  • Fuel tank cleaned and epoxy lined. All panels repainted in original Kawasaki Luminous Dark Red (including the gold metal flake) by Mark Fairey at Kolorinn Kustoms. Mark finished the paintwork with multiple clear coats including all the decal work.
  • Pistons & bores measured up within standard size service limits so fitted new rings, a valve grind and replaced the timing chain and tensioners. Crankshaft bearings all checked ok. Gearbox bearings all checked ok. Clutch plates all measured up well within limits. Valve clearances reset. Oil pump output checked within spec.
  • Carburetors completely stripped, vapour blasted and reassembled with new overhaul kits. Replaced throttle & clutch cables.
  • Ignition coils replaced with new Dyna 1.5ohm coils for electronic ignition.
  • Front & Rear brake systems completely stripped, powder-coated, new master cylinder and piston overhaul kits fitted. New Goodridge braided steel brake lines fitted.
  • Wiring loom completely overhauled and rebuilt with all new connectors. All lights replaced with new items. Instruments completely overhauled & tested by Robinsons in Auckland. Seat refurbished & new cover fitted.
  • Front forks overhauled, new seals. Rear shocks replaced. New Metzler Classique tyres fitted front and back.
  • Exact replica exhaust system hand made & fitted by Peter Mackley at Custom Chambers. All chrome work has been done by Otahuhu Electroplaters.
  • All unique nuts & bolts have either been re-chromed e.g. triple clamp or zinc plated. All general hardware fastners e.g. engine covers have been replaced with 316 Stainless.

This bike has been restored to a very high standard & is immaculate. Everything works as it should. It is not technically original but very close. With the exception of the exhaust system (I do have the original but its shot) it could be very easily made completely original.

I also have available for the successful purchaser if required, a range of major piece parts left over from the spares bike, all in good condition. E.g. Front forks, wheels & brake discs, brake master cylinders, starter motor, complete engine (first oversize) & gearbox minus the head & carbs, swing arm, front bevel drive gbox, rear bevel drive gbox etc.
